About The Region

Murcia is the perfect place to enjoy an energetic visit or to relax and unwind away from it all.

The city after which the region was named was founded in 831 and lies in the middle of the valley through which the River Segura flows.  It is a large, bustling, cosmopolitan city with a stunning cathedral at its heart, and a maze of side streets and plazas around it, dotted with cafés, restaurants, tapas bars and independent shops – as well as the bigger designer names.

The region of Murcia has the added attraction of ‘two seas’, the Mar Menor or Small Sea, and the Mar Mayor (the Mediterranean).  The Mediterranean has endless beaches of white sand, cristal clear water, magnificent cliffs, lively ports and picturesque coves.  The Mar Menor was originally an open bay but is now a large coastal lake of warm seawater measuring around 170km. Both the Med and the Mar Menor are perfect locations for swimming; fishing sailing: water skiing and scuba diving.

The area has a magnificent climate with over 315 days of sunshine and winter temperatures with an average of 18C.  It is famous for the three Championship Golf Courses of La Manga Club, but there are now 14 further courses in the area offering a fabulous opportunity for the keen golfer.

Inland offers conservation areas with a wide range of bird life, the opportunity to go horse riding, cycling, walking, climbing trekking and the chance to savour the rural sights and enjoy peaceful rural accommodation.  This area is an historical adventure with cave dwellings and paintings, incredible architecture and plenty of local museums.

There are two airports, Murcia International Airport, at Corvera  and the El Altet airport at Alicante which is approximately 90km north of Murcia.
